Voting for the PASS Board

SQLServerCentral.com

I got the email with a Zoomerang survey to vote for the PASS board. All are excellent candidates, but ultimately, I could only vote for 3. My choices look like I'm stealing from Steve Jones, but I'm not. I voted for 3, but the 3rd choice were really hard. Two were not. Here are those easy ones:

Andy Warren - I know Andy. Every time we see each other I spend a lot of time picking his brain...

Checkout the PASS Web Site

The SQLTeam.com Weblogs

Have you seen the PASS web site lately?  I'll have to admit that before today I had not looked at it in a long time.  To be honest, I was not all that impressed with it in the past.  But NOW.... WOW!  MUCH Improved!

As of this writing, it is still in "Beta" which I guess is the new, hip way to say "under construction".  I've noticed that the official Dilbert web site has been in Beta for...

SQLPass 2008: The PASS Summit - Day Two

SQLblog.com - The SQL Server blog spot on the web

Introduction

"Hey Andy? What happened to your Day One post?" Excellent question. I was going to post a Day One post - really I was - but I got side-tracked. I won't mention any names, but I will blame the major offenders by their Twitter handles: @BrentO, @sqlagentman, and @SqlBatman.

These gentlemen forced me - through coercion and peer pressure (you teenagers take note) - into joining them...

My reasons for upgrading to SQL Server 2008

SQLblog.com - The SQL Server blog spot on the web

I gave a presentation this morning to my bosses and co-workers explaining some of the benefits of upgrading to SQL Server 2008.  I thought it might be useful to some of you if I shared my reasons for recommending this upgrade even if the cost is daunting.

(Of course, it would be much easier to always stay on the newest version if there were some kind of rolling upgrade licensing in effect; for o...

Performance (How is my SQL Server running?)

All Blogs

In a previous entry I talked about how you should pressure management to purchase SQL Server monitoring tools. This in my eyes is important for more than just the fact you can see quickly when you have problems on your instances but also because we as any associate working for the company that was kind enough to employ us is a business entity. That means we need the business to run with...

How many mirrored databases can I have on a server?

SQLServerCentral.com

How many mirrrored databases can I have on a server? 10 mirrored databases per server is the recommendation for a 32 bit computer WITH 4 processors or less. 64 bit computers have twice as many threads which means, in theory, that you can have twice as many mirrored databases. Also more processors = more threads = more mirrored databases. ...(read more)

Theo gegen den Rest der Welt

So langsam kommt in der Sache Zwanziger ./. Weinreich doch was von der klassischen Presse:

  • Frankfurter Rundschau - “Zwanzigers verbissener Kampf”

  • Frankfurter Rundschau, Kommentar - Wahrheiten

Amazing Presentation by Itzik Ben-Gan

I registered for the Advanced T-SQL Querying & Programming in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 & 2008 at the last minute this morning and I was a little worried that I wasn’t going to be able to get in. Turns out that I had every reason to worry - the presentation room was packed, and with good reason.

Itzik is an amazing presenter. He’s obviously passionate about h...

PASS Summit 2008 Monday Recap (#sqlpass)

Brent Ozar - SQL Server DBA

Great SSIS Boot Camp by Brian Knight

Brian’s a fantastic presenter - really funny, really engaging, and can answer questions on his feet.  The one-day presentation was a great way to get started, and I ordered his Professional SSIS 2008 book to answer my questions as I start digging into SSIS.

One indicator of a good presentation style: people follow along and ask questions, and the presenter’s a...

Now on Twitter

The Rambling DBA

A comment recently asked if I am on Twitter.  Well I wasn't but I am now.  Not sure what exactly I plan to do with it, but I can post short blurbs on what I am doing at the moment throughout the day I guess.

I try to keep my online information business oriented and professional, so don't expect a whole lot of random rambling on there, but we'll see where it g...

The first day of PASS

SQL in the Wild

The conference started with a bang with a full day workshop with Itzik Ben-Gan on advanced T-SQL querying and programming. The advanced adjective wasn’t a joke, if anything it was an understatement.

The workshop started with a look at the OVER clause, new in 2005 and unfortunatly not enhanced in 2008. Itzik covered the OVER clause as it applies to aggregates and also how it works with the...

More Thoughts on SSIS Twitter Integration at #sqlpass

Brent Ozar - SQL Server DBA

Yesterday, Andy Leonard and Jessica Moss announced that their Wednesday 3pm class on SSIS scripting will cover Twitter integration. In today’s SSIS Boot Camp by Brian Knight, I spoke with some DBAs about the Twitter idea.  The initial reaction has been, “Why would you want to do that?  Twitter is so unreliable.”

True: us database administrators are conditioned to working with extremely reliable ...

SQL 2008 : CDC - Change Data Capture

Playing with SQL 2008's CDC - Change Data Capture with the AdventureWorks 2008 database.

CDC has excellent potential in load systems e.g. for data warehousing etc.
It can be used to capture changes on tables or just columns.

[ @source_name = ] 'source_name' ,
[ @role_name = ] 'role_name'

Should You Redesign Your Website to 800x600 – Or Wait For Netbook Makers to Wake Up and Give Us Decent Screens?

CloudAve

Oh, size issues again… Size Matters – said yours truly back in April, before returning the very first eee PC after only a day:

I could get used to the screen size, my fingers would learn to deal with the keyboard, but it’s impossible to browse the Net with this thing.  The problem is that most websites are designed for larger resolution, and the eee can only display part of a page.  Vertical...

Updated Index Defrag Script (2005, 2008)

SQL Fool

Thanks to everyone who left a comment or sent me an e-mail regarding the Index Defrag Script. I’ve received some great feedback and requests for features. I’ve also had some questions regarding how to use it, which I will answer at the end of this post.

Changes include:
- separate version for both Enterprise and Standard editions
    - Standard edition removes partitioning and online...
